Getting permission to travel to spain with medical cannabis

Copy of your prescription

You should already have access to this through your clinics portal, all you need to do is print it off. It doesn't need to be the original a print off from your computer is fine. Some people have used the copy on their phone but I've found it best to have a paper copy to keep along with your other documents.

Copy of your passport and travel tickets

These are going to be used for the next section, we are going to need a scanned copy of your picture page in your passport and also your travel tickets that state the dates you're going to be travelling along with the location you're travelling from and your destination.

The method of getting a travel letter varies from clinic to clinic, I have included a list of popular clinics and their methods below. It's best to leave 7 - 10 days for getting this as clinics may take a while to get back, my experience with Mamedica has been great and usually only takes 24 - 48 hours.

Now that we have all the documents above we can fill out the applications for the permit, find the application form HERE.

For each piece of medication you will need to fill out another form with the relevant details. Once you've filled these out we're ready to send the application email!

In an email straight from the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Area of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products they say:

"""Our legal framework (Article 74 of the Royal Legislative Decree 1/2015, of 24th of July, approving the codified text of the Law on guarantees and rational use of medicinal products and medical devices) permit travel with medicines destined for own use in the carry-on luggage. Therefore, in order to justify it, the patient should carry a medical prescription or a medical report.

However, for narcotics and psychotropic medicinal products under control, the patient should ask the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products by email: [estupefacientes_viajeros@aemps.es](mailto:estupefacientes_viajeros@aemps.es) for a "permit for the entry of narcotics and / or psychotropic drugs for personal medical treatment”.

Travel permits require a minimum of 10 days to be processed.

Please note that, in order to apply for a permit to travel to Spain with narcotic or psychotropic medication, you must email with the following documents correctly completed and in PDF format:

- Completed and signed application form (attached document).

- Up-to-date medical certificate, signed and stamped, stating the doctor's identification details (name and surname, registration number, address and telephone number of the doctor or medical centre), the illness the subject is suffering from, the treatment and the daily doses prescribed.

- Current and original signed medical prescription ("Current" being understood as the prescription that will be used to obtain those medicines that the patient needs to travel with).

- Copy of your identity document (Passport)

- Copy of the nominative travel tickets (flight, train, etc.).

IMPORTANT: All documents must be attached in PDF format.

All documents must be translated into Spanish or English.

The authorisation is valid for three months.

The maximum amount of medicine allowed is for three months of treatment (15 days in case of cannabis or its derived products).  After this time, you must obtain the medicine through the legal channels established in our country.

To avoid any unnecessary delays, please make sure that you revise and include all the required documentation requested for each application.  Any pending documents may result in the application being filed away and deemed incomplete."""

So going through the checklist, we have the application forms that you've filled in. We have your travel letter from your clinic. The prescription for the medicines you have applications for. A copy of your passport and a copy of your travel tickets. Below I've added a template email you can use to email the embassy.

La cantidad finalmente transportada podrá ser inferior, dependiendo de la medicación disponible en sus envases originales y etiquetados en la fecha de salida. Quedo a su disposición para aportar cualquier información o documentación adicional que resulte necesaria.

Make sure you attach all your documents and send the email to: estupefacientes_viajeros@aemps.es

After this is the waiting game, they say it takes a minimum of 10 days to process. I've gotten my permits in more time than that and less time than that so it's best to leave as long as you can. Once you've received your reply then congrats! You're travelling legal. Print off your permits, each bit of medicine has its own permit.

Although this might seem like the most stressful part, it really isn't. Make sure you have all of your paperwork in order, your travel letter & your permits, make sure your medicine is in its original packaging (it doesn't matter if its open or not).

A good idea is to put your medicine in a smell proof container, this just makes the chance of any hassle lower. Keeping everything together in its own case is also a good idea.

Keep your medicine in your hand luggage - DO NOT send it through the baggage handlers.

Don't worry and enjoy your holiday. Once over there, keep your paperwork and ID in reach whenever consuming and you will be good to go.
